Dressing the Millstones

Posted by Oliver Stoate on

Dressing the millstones at Cann Mills is a dusty job. Now the weather is improving, it was nice to be able to do it outside in the sun with a gentle breeze blowing the dust away.

Our millstones require dressing after 18–24 months depending on how hard they have been working.

The surfaces need to be levelled and the furrows adjusted to the correct depth for optimum milling. The furrows have three main functions; to shear the grains as they pass through the stones, encourage the ground meal to pass to the outer edge and help ventilate the grinding surfaces and prevent the meal from overheating.
